Two-Phase into Three-Phase

Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 6/1/2002

A joint effort by Black Hills Ventures and Phase Technologies, both of Rapid City, S.D., has led to the creation of an alternative for smaller companies and rural users for converting single-phase to three-phase power.

The Phase Perfect supplies three-phase power from a single-phase source, without the power quality problems inherent in rotary and static phase converters, or in trying to adapt a variable-frequency drive as a phase converter.

It has an input stage with electronic power factor correction, producing true, near-unity power factor. The input current is sinusoidal with very low harmonic content. The output is true sine-wave three-phase power, so no external filtering is required. And a digital signal processor monitors the process to generate balanced voltages and currents and protect the load. The Phase Perfect is fully developed, currently in use and UL-approved.

From Pure Power, Summer 2002.
