Competitive Power Gen Up 400% from 1997

Competitive generating capacity—power generation plants owned by suppliers who sell on the open market—has increased fourfold since 1997, according to the Electric Power Supply Association.
In 1997, competitive power suppliers accounted for only 8.5% of the nation's installed generated capacity. But as of year-end 2001, the figure was reported as 36%, which represents about 319.5 gigawatts.
"Just a little over a year ago, it seemed 25% was an optimistic target for 2001, but industry restructuring is happening very fast," says Lynne Church, president of EPSA.
