BACnet unplugged: updates made to building controls standard

Advances related to the BACnet standard, including the recommendation of a public review for addendum that would tunnel BACnet over ZigBee wireless networks, were made in January at the ASHRAE winter meeting.  
The proposed addendum q would lead to a reduction in the cost of installation at the sensor and controller level by reducing the amount of wired networking required in a building automation system. In addition, battery-operated devices, including sensors, will be ZigBee only, but powered controllers would have BACnet/ZigBee capability.
The BACnet committee worked for additional approval of nine addenda during the meeting. For example, addendum j, drafted by the Life Safety and Security working group, comprised of BACnet and experts from various physical security industries, is in support for physical access control. Addendum i is support for lighting applications, which was drafted by the Lighting Applications working groups, comprised of representatives from lighting controls manufacturers and BACnet experts.
