U.S. Green Building Council Calls for New LEED Energy Performance Requirements
By Consulting Specifying Engineer Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 5/16/2007 1:12:00 PM MT
In order to increase the impact of the LEED Green Building Rating System on reducing building energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, USGBC is proposing that all LEED projects be required to achieve two "Optimize Energy Performance" points towards LEED certification. Per the LEED development process, USGBC is now seeking member approval of the proposed change.
Member ballot is the final step in consensus process used to develop, test, evaluate, revise and publish LEED rating systems and credit mandates. Member firms are being encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to the evolution of the LEED rating system.
USGBC is seeking member approval to update all balloted commercial LEED Green Building Rating Systems with the following change:
All LEED projects are required to achieve two (2) Optimize Energy Performance points. The two point additional requirement goes into effect for all LEED projects registering two weeks after the date of USGBC member approval. LEED for Homes or LEED for Neighborhood Development projects are exempt from this requirement. Pending member approval on June 12, 2007, this requirement will go into effect June 26, 2007. The two mandatory points will count towards the project's LEED certification. Project teams will be reminded of this change at time of registration, through LEED Online, and illustrated in the rating system and reference guide documents.
In accordance with USGBC balloting policy, the ballot period will be open for 30 days from Monday, May 14th through Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 at 5:00 PM EDT.
Only an organization’s USGBC Primary Contact can vote. To identify the primary contact for your organization, visit the USGBC Member database at https://www.usgbc.org, under Members>Member Directory and enter the name of your organization. All primary contacts were notified of the ballot period via email on Monday, May 14.
